Brakes are arguably the most important part of any vehicle, starting and going are of course necessary, but having the ability to stop quickly and whenever necessary is critical. Your trusted mechanic on the Gold Coast will very quickly be able to access your breaks and tell you if you need them serviced and adjusted or replaced.
Modern Brake Systems
Many modern cars are being made so that they are very energy efficient, in order to do this as well as reducing the overall manufacturing costs, many components have become lighter and thinner. This is often the case with brake pads and rotors.
Disk brakes use a system where a rotor or disk is attached to the axle so it revolves as the wheels turn. On either side of these are disk pads that are worked using a set of calipers. These in turn are activated by a hydraulic piston that forces them to apply the pads to the rotor slowing or stopping the vehicle every time you apply the brakes.
Older cars had heavy rotors that were designed to disperse the heat caused when the pads contact the rotor. These heavy rotors were also able to be resurfaced as they became worn or damaged through use.
Modern rotors are often much lighter and are too thin to be resurfaced, a process where a small amount of metal is machined from them during the servicing process.
Usually the brake pads last between 80,000 and 120,000 Kilometers, depending on the way a vehicle is driven and the materials that the pads and rotors are made with.
It’s a normal practice to change the brake rotors after every 2nd or 3rd set of replacement brake pads are fitted, between 160,000 and 260,000 Kilometers.
When a vehicle is driven hard with constant breaking this can cause the rotors to heat up and become distorted, shortening their usable life or even wear them down, diminishing their ability to work properly.
Some types of rotors can be resurfaced, but because they are now relatively inexpensive, it’s more common to replace them rather than paying for the labour costs involved in having them machined.
When to Service or Replace Your Brakes
It’s important to have your vehicle serviced regularly, at least at the manufacturers recommended times. Your local mechanic on the Gold Coast will be able to do this for you. Part of the service should be a proper brake inspection. They will tell you what needs to be done to keep your vehicle in a safe condition.
You need to have your brakes serviced if:
- You feel a change in the way your brakes work
- There is any noise when you apply the brakes
- You feel a pulsating sensation
- Your vehicle doesn’t stop in a straight line
- You feel they are not as efficient as they normally are
- You are planning a long trip
Because being able to stop is such an important aspect of driving any vehicle, it’s vital that you have your brakes serviced and any defective or worn parts replaced by your local mechanic on the Gold Coast so important. Servicing should be done at the manufacturers suggested times and any time you notice a change in your brakes.
